I don't think Sony owns this IP. Arrowhead is still indie and Sony published the game giving them some rights.

For the record, I'm not mad. I just find this whole thing to be self inflicting for no reason other than "Greed is Good", haha. But I do feel for the PC gamers with no Playstation and no PSN account being forced to sign-up to PSN after being able to play the game for almost 3 months, or those who don't even have access to PSN in their country. I see loads of ads for VPNs so maybe those gamers without PSN access can get on with one of those services, sucks but what else can they do.
They absolutely own the IP

The people in one of those country can just sign up for a PSN account elsewhere. Nobody is getting banned for it and they don't need a VPN. Its something Sony should have considered but even that is a non issue.

Nothing to feel for them about. They have to create an account. Big deal. Could you imagine if we were talking about PS gamers review bombing Sea of Thieves because they needed a Microsoft account?

Whoa, I thought Arrowhead kept the rights not only for their studio but their game creation as well. I'm sure Arrowhead has no regrets about that, lol.

Wait, how can someone access PSN if its not available in their region? That's why I threw out the VPN thing. Sony will have to come up with something or roll out refunds.

Arrowhead needs to chillout as well. They are talented but they made fun of gamers during the first round of nerfs with their "Get Good" statement after which they had to apoligize and promise to do better. Now one of their genius community managers told gamers to go ahead and review bomb them which is happening of course.

Sure, gamers like almost everyone today are super sensitive which sucks. But it's never a good idea to belittle or make fun of the very people your success relies on. If gamers turn on Arrowhead it won't matter how talented they are what content they put out in the future. You have to know how to play the game and just keep you mouth shut even in the face of stupidity if you want those checks to keep rolling in.

You can create PSN for other countries and use them wherever. People have been doing it for years. Technically they could ban you which is why they need an official solution but they don't and won't ban.

I don't think people know that which is why they think they won't be able to play anymore.

Exactly and SOT got review bombed for different reasons 🤣

Only all those told you upfront. Not a couple months after millions had bought it. (Though Sony might have mentioned this before launch according to some articles).
And Sony don't have a great track record of keeping user details safe.

The steam page allegedly told you upfront about it. Just wasn't enforced due to "technical" issues.

Steam gets hacked, Microsoft gets hacked, Nintendo gets hacked, Sony gets hacked. It's a cycle we hear about every decade. If a certain group want to get into the company's info or customers account, I'm sure there is a will and way.

The blunder here was allowing Helldivers 2 to be sold in regions where PSN is not supported and Sony needs to find a solution fast. Of course the work around is making a PSN account in a region where it IS supported. In this day and age where PC users have VPN to pirate and download games illegally plus modding games or making multiple fake email accounts , this isn't too farfetched a request all things considered. These PCMR just don't want to make more accounts in an age where every major publisher wants one.

"The page pitches it as “benefit,” but not mandatory. But for Helldivers 2, it will soon be mandatory. Conversely, the Steam page does say a PSN account is required, and this was always stated as the plan."

Could Sony be readying a launcher?

Have they or the dev commented on why there’s a need for said requirement?

Yeah the CEO said this was Sony's call. They are trying to find a workaround for gamers who bought the game outside psn regions. How were these people able to buy the game on Steam if it's against Sony's TOS to have a PSN account outside your region is the question. Should have never been able to sell to them in the first place.

Issuing refunds is one solution but in this day and age where PCMR have multiple fake email or alias accounts who download movies , tv shows or games illegally with vpn, or download mod / cheats in games to get competitive advantage I find it hard to believe they can not make one more PSN account.

lol, so the CEO knew 6 months beforehand. It was also stated on the Steam page of the game. AH should have ensured gamers were well informed of this . Again, why were non PSN countries gamers able to purchase the game on Steam? AH said they don't handle sales so Sony and Valve have to answer this.

Funny how concurrent users aren't really affected

People that are in supported countries complaining more than unsupported ? 😅

How is that an attack?

That twitter account just shows how this is an attempt to get people upset about nothing. Helldivers needs to be taken down because its "woke".

I agree. It's a whole lot of nothing in the grand scheme of things especially when other major publishers already do it.

Sony/AH needs to figure out how to deal with the existing players who already invested some time into the game but live in unsupported countries unless they allow them to sign up for other country's PSN account.
